Men in the Lakeland will have a chance at a health checkup that may save a life. The Prostate Cancer Center in Calgary will be sending its rural “Man Van” clinic to Bonnyville and Cold Lake on August 19th. The mobile clinic is spearheaded by Program Manager Ken Rabb, who says men over 40 can drop by for a small blood test referred to as a Prostate Specific Antigen test.
“Once you get your PSA test, were going to ask you to stick around a few more minutes. We’ll do your blood pressure, blood sugar, waist circumference as well as a stress check for you.”
The results from the blood test will be mailed out after about two weeks. Rabb says getting early detection on prostate cancer is a major tool for fighting the disease.
“Prostate cancer is the leading cancer in men, but if it’s caught early it’s 95% treatable. That’s why we’re out in the community, getting guys to get checked.”
The tests are completely free but donations for the program are being accepted. The van will be at the ATB branch in Bonnyville from 9 AM to 12 PM before making its way to the Cold Lake branch between 2 PM and 5 PM. All testing is on a first-come-first-served basis.
