A new carbon tax in Saskatchewan shouldn’t hurt prices at the pump around the Lakeland. The new federal carbon pricing was brought in on Monday to Saskatchewan as well as New Brunswick, Manitoba and Ontario after the four provinces didn’t set a provincial carbon tax. Gas Buddy Senior Analysist Dan McTeague says prices going up 70 kilometres to the east shouldn’t send a wave over the border to the Lakeland.
“Bottom line: Don’t get mad at the gas station owner in Bonnyville or Cold Lake. They’re all selling gasoline either at or below cost. That’s a really good thing and a benefit for consumers.”
Prices at the regular pump around the Lakeland average around 113.9 cents per litre. United Conservative Party Candidate Jason Kenney says if his party is elected they will scrap the Alberta carbon tax. McTeague says Albertans would see some savings when filling up until the feds step in.
“For the period of time, until Ottawa tries to re-impose it, you will be saving net seven cents per litre for gasoline and eight point two cents per litre on diesel.
Gas prices rose about five cents per litre in Saskatchewan after the tax was announced.
