Cold Lake excited about future bike trail

If mountain biking is your thing, Cold Lake could soon be your new favorite destination. The city hosted an information session on Jen 6th with the idea to build a mountain bike trail complex on land near the Museum complex. Over 100 people packed the meeting room to hear from City Officials as well as planners and contractors.

Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland was at the meeting. He’s impressed with the planning he’s seen so far.

“We think the location is going to be perfect. A lot of elevation. It’s great to see community involvement.”

The man in charge of the build will be Jay Hoots of Hoots Limited, A Vancouver-based designer of bike trails and parks across Canada. Hoots reportedly spent time before the meeting mapping out his vision and discussing with local representatives on the right fit for the 120-acre plot of land.

Mayor Copeland says Hoots was the choice for the designer by local bike enthusiasts.

“He is highly regarded by the biking enthusiasts. Sometimes projects are best given to grassroots people to find the people they want to work with. In this case, with the drawings I saw from him, I think we’re going to have an outstanding product.”

Copeland doesn’t expect the build to be too complicated, saying that a lot of the natural terrain will be used instead of having to be manufactured. It’s expected the complex will be year -round and multi-use. Cross-country runners, hikers and even skiers may be able to use the course as well. There is no set date on when construction will begin.
