Food trucks will have a place in Cold Lake. Cold Lake city council has announced they have passed a policy allowing mobile vendors in the community. After debate and planning that originally saw some vendors not impressed, City of Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland says the new deal should see both sides of the coin pleased.
“I think we did a good job of hearing what the business community was saying and also from the food vendors themselves. (There is) a lot of support out there for the mobile food vendors that come into town.”
The new policy outlines what vendors can expect when they set up shop, allows for a safety code inspection of their units and establishes a 50 metre setback from any permanent shop in Cold Lake that sells a similar product. Mayor Copeland says that setback can be waived if the mobile vendor and the permanent shop owner both agree on it.
The price for licensing has also been set. An annual permit will set vendors back $500. Reduced cost “special event” permits will be available as well. Mayor Copeland says the price of the fee is a reflection of the opinions he heard from concerned potential vendors.
“We walked it back from $1000 down to $500, I think that’s a significant cut. We’ll review it next year and see if we have to go further.”
