St.Paul Education is discussing ways to make the trip to school safer for students in the Lakeland. The board sat down at their meeting in mid-April. With the Humboldt bus tragedy still fresh on board members minds, talks were of what can be done to increase safety for their riders.
Superintendent Glen Brodziak says having a peek at the rules in place has opened up discussion around the group.
“We, of course, wanted to look at our protocols and procedures and see if there’s any areas we should be looking at improving or doing further research on.”
An idea has been put forth to keep the strobe lights busses use on to grab drivers attention. Brodziak says safety is the number one priority when getting students to school.
“We figured it can’t hurt. It’s a pro-active move if anybody in any other vehicle sees a strobe light in daylight. The decision was made that strobe lights will be on all the time.
The board also talked about placement of students on school busses. They say studies show that sitting at the back of the bus can leave a rider more vulnerable in the event of a crash. Brodziak says part of the reason for the talks was a phone call he received from a concerned resident after the Humboldt Bus tragedy.
