The Elk Point Fire Department is putting the call out to anyone who might want to become a firefighter. The current force has 27 on the roster, and Fire Chief Lyle Frisby says he’d like to get that number up a few more.
“At our fire board meeting that we had last week, they’ve approved that we can move up to 35 members.”
The local economy can make it hard to get a grasp on how many firefighters can be committed for a shift at any given time.
“One of the big things is that during the day so many guys work in the oilfield and their shifts (overlap). Sometimes you only get one, two, maybe three members showing up for a daytime call, sometimes you get 18. You never know.”
Some basic requirements for joining include being 18 years of age or older, having a valid class 5 license, and being in good health.
Frisby says 3 of his crew are women, and encourages absolutely anyone with an interest in becoming a firefighter to attend a practice meeting on Mondays at 7 pm at the Elk Point Fire Hall.
