Kehewin Holding Emergency Meeting After Court Reinstates Gadwa, Kicks Out Joly

The Kehewin Cree Nation Council is holding an emergency band meeting next week regarding a letter from the federal government on the status of members Brenda Joly and Gordon Gadwa.

Gadwa had been removed from council in 2015 on allegations of bribing voters with Joly named as interim chief. However, four separate judges have agreed that Gadwa must be reinstated and Joly removed her position. It was determined that the Election Officer made an error in simply bumping Joly up to the position having the second most votes. The Kehewin Cree Nation’s bylaws make no room for this move.

With the court decision, council has removed their signatures from the documents that kicked out Gadwa and brought in Joly and it appears a by-election will be held soon. The emergency meeting to determine the next steps are scheduled for October 26th at 10 AM at the Kehewin Recreation Centre.
