The county has installed surveillance cameras in the hamlet of Lac La Biche’s downtown area.
Eight cameras have been placed around the intersection of 101 Avenue and 101 Street as part of a pilot project. The cameras’ main purpose is to aid law enforcement agencies in their investigations. The saved recordings will only be available to the County’s IT and Enforcement Services staff, as well as the RCMP. No other County employees will have access to the footage and none of it will be made public either.
The County has taken the step of installing surveillance cameras after receiving a great deal of feedback from local residents and business owners, who are concerned about the safety and appearance of the downtown area. The County is also upgrading two Peace Officers to Level One status, so they will have increased authority, and the County is applying to bring two additional RCMP officers to the local detachment.
