Cold Lake Looking For Commercial Air Service

After years of trying, the City of Cold Lake appears to be closer to getting commercial flights than ever before.

“We’ve been working with the federal government and 4-wing and we’re getting closer to getting commercial air service to land at 4 wing,” says Mayor Craig Copeland. “Right now all the boxes are ticked off and we just now have to go out and get a commercial carrier to come to Cold Lake.”

The service would likely fly to Calgary International, where travelers can then take the next leg of their journey. The city did have a carrier interested in offering service back in 2014, but the crash in the local economy that year killed those plans.

“We’ve approached them again,” says Copeland. “There’s others we’ll be approaching in the next couple months. Right now what we’re doing is building a business case for recruiting an airline service to Cold Lake. Everybody knows the economy has changed a lot since 2012 to 14, so we’re just redoing our work.”

“There’s a couple carriers that we know are interested in the conversation, so we’ll see if we can entice them into serving our area.
