Mayor Gene Gets some Practice to Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

Bonnyville Mayor Gene Sobolewski rocked a pair of flashy red heels at Tuesday’s council meeting, preparing to “Walk a Mile In Her Shoes” at the February 26th Bonnyville Pontiacs game.

Sobolewski and a group of other men will be sporting the specially made shoes at the game collecting donations for the Dr. Margaret Savage Crisis Centre and taking a stand against family violence. It’s the first big event the centre has put on to get their name out there since expanding into Bonnyville last year.

Despite only being open for a brief while without much advertising, the Bonnyville office is already busy.

“So far our program has reached out to fourty eight females, and I want you to think about this, this is March of 2016 [since we started], so this isn’t even a year,” Candina Wosminity with the Bonnyville branch told council. “[We’ve also reached out to] thirteen males, which makes about sixty one files opened up so far. Remember, we’re just getting on our feet here. We’re just now doing a lot of the community awareness pieces, so it’s quite significant.”

Brenda Parsons, who was in the delegation as well, stressed that such an event is especially needed in Alberta, which has the second highest rate of domestic violence in Canada.

To register for the event or for more information please call the Bonnyville Community Support office at 780-826-2656 or email [email protected].
