Northern Lights Estimates 180K in Extra Costs From Carbon Levy

Secretary-Treasurer Paula Elock provided the Board of Northern Light Public Schools with an estimate on the direct and indirect costs the Board will incur as a result of the carbon levy at Monday’s board meeting.

Direct costs, which includes the levy on natural gas to heat the division’s facilities, fuel for the division’s maintenance and transportation vehicles and mile- age for staff, are estimated at $90,000. Elock noted indirect costs are much harder to ascertain. While the division will be tracking invoices that include the levy as a line item, it will be harder to capture the increased costs the division pays due to suppliers raising prices to cover the costs they incur for producing and shipping their products. She estimated indirect costs could be an additional $90,000.
