Lac La Biche County Formally Requests Opening of Lakes to Fishers

Lac La Biche County is lobbying the provincial government to amend fishing regulations to aid local tourism.

The County is sending letters to Alberta Environment and Parks officials, asking to reconsider the no-catch restrictions on walleye fishing in the region. The County hopes the change will attract more anglers to the area over the summer.

“We are asking the provincial government to look at opening between 10 and 15 lakes in the area for walleye fishing, and then monitoring and stocking them if needed,” said Mayor Omer Moghrabi. “Our region has so many fishable lakes and rivers, and when tourists cast their lines here instead of elsewhere, there are real economic benefits for the local communities. Recent public meetings have shown that residents and visitors are keen to see a change like this, and our County is committed to developing its tourism base.”

The County is also sending letters to neighbouring municipalities, asking for their support in lobbying for changes to the fishing regulations.
