Councillor MacDonald Believes Naming Field After Vaughese Too Important to Give Just to Sponser

When a new sports field is made, it’s almost always named after a corporate sponsor for some extra funding.

Cold Lake City Councillor Darrell MacDonald has taken this into consideration with his upcoming bill to name the new field at the Energy Centre. While the bill seeks to name the field after recently deceased Norther Lights Trustee Tom Varughese, there will be an option for a sponsor to piggyback onto the name too.

MacDonald believes the cause is more important than having only a sponser name the field. “How I feel as a councillor is, you get chances in your terms in council to make a difference. Sometimes I feel that have been in the community and volunteered for many, many years don’t get the recognition they deserve. Money can buy just about everything. This honour I think is very deserved for a very important person in Cold Lake. We have a baseball diamond named after a very important person in Cold Lake named the Ivan Crooke baseball diamond. Council at the time recommended the place be named after a very influential person that helped build Cold Lake. [Varughese] did the same thing.

Varughese was very involved in Cold Lake sports. He was coaching a u-18 soccer team and playing on a senior squad up until a year ago when he was diagnosed with cancer.

The bill will be introduced at the February 14th council meeting.
