Whiteout Pounds the Lakeland

Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid driving if it all possible as a major wind storm makes its way across the Lakeland today.

An Extreme Cold Warning is already in effect with wind chill taking temperatures under minus 40 degrees. Several drivers have reported whiteout conditions on the highways making travel impossible. The Weather Network reports that gusts in Bonnyville are nearly 50 kilometres an hour and are topping 60 in Cold Lake. Winds in St. Paul are clocking in around 40.

The storm is expected to taper off somewhat around 8 PM to 35 Kilometeres and eventually subside overnight.

The county of Lac La Biche has announced that curbside pickup service will be delayed until the storm calms down.  The Plamondon landfill is closed until further notice because of the weather, but Beaver Lake landfill is open at this time.
