Northern Lights School Division Fears Budget Cuts Could Be Coming to The Transportation Department

Fears of budget cuts were addressed at the Northern Lights school district’s last board meeting on February 18^th. The school district receives funding to pay for transportation for students that live more than 2.4 km from their school. The department’s funding is already down two per cent or about $84,000 this year, but is transporting five per cent more students. Budget cuts, coupled with not enough drivers for the routes could be detrimental to the contractors who provide the busing service, many of whom are already on the verge of shutting down or retiring. The district recently met with the transportation minister regarding the problems and hopes to gain attention provincial that there is no room to decrease their budget.
