Day of Mourning Ceremony Gets off to a Good Start in Bonnyville

The Lakeland’s first ever day of mourning ceremony for workers who died or were injured on the job was a success.

The event was held at the Bonnyville C2 today. MLA Scott Cyr said a few words and read the proclamation and Mayor Gene Sobolewski gave a speech as well. Local farmer Ray Murphy’s segment of the ceremony was particularly touching. Murphy was injured in an accident in 2009 while he was working with his cattle. Pastor Ken Jagessar of the Bonnyville Community Church then offered a prayer before going into the minute of silence, and after that the flags at the C2 were brought to half mast.

One of the organizers, Gayle Bulbeck says they plan to have next year’s ceremony in Cold Lake and to have the location change around the Lakeland from year to year.
