Volunteer Cleanup Gets Foley Sandpits Back Into Pristine Shape

In spite of early morning snow, then rain on Saturday, some 50-60 or so volunteers got together and managed to clean out all the garbage in the Foley Sand Pits.
The crew certainly had their work cut out for them. Spearheader of the effort Robbie Cole says they ended up filling two twenty yard roll off bins full of large items like mattresses, three dumpsters full of bagged garbage, and four dump trailers of appliances before the day was done. Some of the garbage was particularly… unpleasant. One unlucky volunteer stumbled upon an ice box that had apparently been used as a makeshift toilet by a squatter for some time before being abandoned. Squatters weren’t the only source of garbage though. Oil filters and construction supplies were also found lying about the area, appearing to come from a trucking company of some sort. “We found everything but a dead body,” Cole quips.

Most volunteers stayed around from 9 until 12, but a few more stayed for a couple more hours to finish things off. Cole says he might organize a few more cleanups with the MD’s help in the future, though he’s not sure what areas yet.
