Barricading Incident at Whitefish Lake Ends Peacefully

Charges have been laid against a 37 year old Whitefish (Goodfish) Lake First Nation man after barricading himself in his house with a loaded gun.

Police responded to a report of a domestic altercation on the 18th. Police soon learned the man had a gun and claimed he was “ready for the police” when they came. RCMP were able to find the victim and get her and her child to safety while other officers evacuated the surrounding area.

The man eventually surrendered peacefully a little after 6 in the afternoon. Five guns and a “substantial” amount of ammunition were seized from the home afterwards.

Two other people were arrested during the standoff after repeatedly trying to breech the security perimeter established by the police. “The RCMP cannot stress enough,” the press release reads “how imperative it is that these perimeters are respected by pedestrians and vehicular traffic. Failure to comply with a police officer’s directions in a high risk situation can result in arrest and prosecution for obstruction.”

This marks the third armed and barricaded event for the St. Paul detachment since the beginning of 2016. All have been resolved successfully without injury to the public or officers.
