Cold Lake Library’s Reading Garden in the Running For Provincial Award

The Cold Lake Public Library is looking for your votes. The Library’s reading garden has been nominated for a People’s Choice Award by Alberta Municipal Affairs.

The library is going toe-to-toe with 29 other nominated programs put on by libraries across the province. The five with the most votes will be presented with an award at the Alberta Library Conference, being held April 30 to May 3.

The garden has been in place for a year. The library decided to turn an underused area at the back into a full-fledged garden where readers can pick up a book and relax. The garden also serves an educational purpose, teaching children more about plants. The garden contains a “smelling garden” full of nice smelling flowers and an “eating garden” full of fresh vegetables kids can pick off the vine.

The library has some big plans for the garden as well. Last year they constructed a stage and plan on having some local bands play a few shows through the summer.

The library is looking to win the award for the second time. They last won for their teen advisory board initiative.
