As school boards across Alberta face a deadline to submit a gender identity policy by the end of the month, Northern Lights is sitting back comfortably, already having a policy in place since 2014.
Upon learning of the NDP’s new guidelines on accommodating transgender students back in January, the division reviewed their current policy and found it needed no change at all to conform with the provincial rules. The policy allows students to join sports teams or social clubs based on the gender they identify with and to have their official record changed to the appropriate gender as well. Restroom accommodations are made on a student by student basis.
