Crime down in Cold Lake Last Year

The Cold Lake RCMP are reporting an overall decrease in crime in the city in 2015 compared to 2014.

Violent crime in the city decreased 5.4% from 364 in 2014 to 343 in 2015. Notably, sexual assaults were nearly cut in half from 15 to 8 and other sexual assaults were halved from 8 to 4. Assaults decreased slightly as well, from 214 to 211.

The drop in violent crimes was counteracted somewhat by an increase in property crime, which includes break and enters, theft, shoplifting  and the like. 1,077 such incidents were reported in 2014, which increased to 1,101 in 2015.

Crime is generally higher in Cold Lake than the provincial average. A 2014 report scored the city’s crime severity index ar 121.9, compared to a provincial average of 85.7. That number put Cold Lake 12th highest on a list of 43 municipalities in Alberta.
