Two People are dead, and two others were seriously injured following a collision west of St. Paul earlier this week.
St. Paul RCMP say officers responded to an iPhone crash notification on March 2, around 1:09 p.m. on Highway 29, one kilometre west of St. Paul, between Range Road 105 and 110.
Police say preliminary investigation found a garbage truck travelling eastbound on Highway 29 was unable to stop for a semi-truck that was turning southbound. The garbage truck swerved into the westbound lane to avoid the semi, but collided head-on with an SUV that was travelling westbound.
“The 36-year-old female driver and a 44-year-old male passenger of the SUV succumbed to their injuries on scene,” reads the RCMP release. “The two rear passengers needed to be extracted from the vehicle. 29 and 38-year-old female passengers sustained life-threatening injuries and were transported to hospital, where they are receiving medical attention.”
The 53-year-old garbage truck driver was treated at the scene for his injuries and released.
St. Paul Fire and Rescue, Emergency Medical Services, Saddle Lake RCMP and multiple units from St. Paul RCMP attended to the collision. “An RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist from the Eastern Alberta District is assisting in this investigation,” read the release. “The investigation remains ongoing.”
St. Paul RCMP say they extend their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
