Change is on the way in Alberta
Urban and rural Alberta are on the pathway of uniting as one. A resolution the City of Cold Lake brought to the floor at the 2014 AUMA Convention was passed by a 63-37 per cent vote. The resolution does not force amalgamation, but rather, provide incentives and financial support for those municipalities looking to discuss regional collaboration. With nearly 85 per cent of Albertans living in urban municipalities, the Provincial government has allowed for a fair process in urbans and rurals working together. City of Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland, says the AUMA Board will now work with the Province on opportunities for amalgamation.
Mayor Copeland adds a number of rural municipalities in Alberta need help, and the resolution can provide that assistance.
