Smoky Lake emergency department facing temporary closures in June

There will be no physician on site in the emergency department at the George McDougall Smoky Lake Healthcare Centre during three periods this June.

Alberta Health Services says the closures will take place from 4 p.m. June 5 to 8 a.m. June 6, from 4 p.m. June 19 to 8 a.m. June 20, and from 4 p.m. June 26 to 8 a.m. June 27.

During those times, nursing staff will be on-site to provide triage, assessments, and referrals to nearby emergency departments. EMS services will be available, and patients are advised to call 911 in an emergency or Health Link at 811 for non-urgent concerns.

AHS says coverage may still be found and the disruptions could be cancelled. “We are grateful for the support of surrounding healthcare centres and medical staff and would like to thank the community for its patience and understanding during this time.
