Bonnyville RCMP shares online safety tips for seniors week

In awareness of Seniors Week, the Bonnyville RCMP is encouraging older adults and those who support them, to take steps to stay safe online and avoid falling victim to fraud.

As more seniors use the internet for banking, shopping, and staying connected, it’s important to recognize the warning signs of scams.

Fraudsters often target seniors through fake messages, phone calls, or online relationships. Bonnyville RCMP say strong passwords, updated devices, and caution with unsolicited requests can go a long way in preventing fraud. “You are not being rude – you’re being safe,” reads part of the detachment’s advice, reminding seniors not to feel pressured by high-stakes demands or urgent threats.

Residents are urged to talk with trusted family members before responding to suspicious messages, never share personal information, and report any scam attempts to local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
