A new vision for Veterans Memorial Park is moving forward in Cold Lake, with a redesigned concept that aims to honour veterans while turning downtown into a inviting, functional area for public events.
The idea originated from two students at Assumption Junior/Senior High School, whose January presentation sparked city efforts now nearing the final stages.
Presented during the May 20 Corporate Priorities Committee meeting, the refines design includes dynamic LED lighting, granite pavers, a circular walkway around the cenotaph, shaded tree areas, and benches, all designed to balance remembrance and usability. Engineering Manager Rezaur Bhuiyan said the plan “serves to recognize veterans, promote community engagement and reinforce regional identity.”
The $473,454 redesign created by George Harris Collaborative with Legion input, was praised for its appearance and versatility. Deputy Mayor Vicky Lefebvre said, “The design looks really good and it will be able to have a lot of people there,” though she questioned the granites cost. Councillor Ryan Bailey floated the idea of turning the cenotaph into a sundial, which administration said could be explore in the future.
The final plan is still being shaped with Legion feedback and design changes to come, including work on a crosswalk feature.
