St. Paul RCMP urge residents to take action against home break-ins

St. Paul RCMP is reminding residents to take proactive steps to safeguard their homes and property from break and enters, emphasizing that prevention and awareness play a key role in community safety.

Officers recommend homeowners always lock doors and windows, reinforce entry points with deadbolts and sturdy frames, and consider added measures like security bars for sliding doors and basement windows. Outside visibility is also important, motion activated lighting and trimmed landscaping can eliminate hiding spots, while building relationships with neighbours can help deter suspicious activity.

RCMP say simple habits can make a big difference, such as using security signs, keeping valuables out of sight and using timers for lights when away. Untouched snow or uncut grass can signal an empty home, so officers say to get someone to keep up appearances when residents are not there.

Additional steps include installing visible cameras or video doorbells, securing garages and sheds, and always locking vehicles and removing valuables.

“Our community safety starts with awareness,” said Staff Sergeant Dennis Silliker. “Often we don’t think of securing our homes until it’s too late. I would encourage all of our community members to please take the proper steps to secure your homes and your property.”
