Cold Lake First Nations seek city support for National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration

CEO of Cold Lake First Nations (CLFN) Entertainment Businesses Shawna Janvier brought forward a request for support from Cold Lake city council, ahead of this year’s National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration.

Janvier asked the city to provide tables and chairs for public seating at the upcoming June 20 celebration, which will take place at the Casino dene and hotel commercial land parking lot operated by CLFN. Setup for the event is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. with take down immediately after the festivities are done.

“I understand that the city provided previously some tables and chairs for approximately 500 people or so,” said Janvier, noting that the free event continues to grow. “Last year we had over 1,000 people in attendance. It was very well attended.”

The celebration features food, powwow dancers, a DJ, drummers, and cultural activities, and i supported by CLFN businesses that donate goods and services. Janvier also extended an invitation for the city to contribute a donation item, which would be acknowledged along with other sponsors’ logos on 1,000 event t-shirts.

Council is expected to review and respond to the request ahead of the June 20 celebration
