Brush fire north of Highway 660 now under control

The Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority says the brush fire burning near Highway 660 and Range Road 465 has been brought under control and crews remain on-site working to extinguish flare-ups and hotspots.

Matting has been placed to allow vehicles and equipment to access the core of the brush where muskeg-like terrain hinders operations. The northeast corner was excavated, removing much of the peatmoss and roots burning underground,” according to a media release on May 8.

Sprinklers are now being installed and will run continuously in key areas.

The M.D. of Bonnyville supplied a large water tank to feed the sprinklers. Work continues on cleanup and site remediation.”

Officials say dry and windy conditions are being closely monitored in case the situation changes.
