Cold Lake moves ahead with plans to expand Cold Lake Medical Clinic

The city of Cold Lake is advancing with plans to expand and renovate the Cold Lake Medical Clinic.

CAO Kevin Nagoya provided details to update the Corporate Priorities Committee on April 15. The project, first outlined in the Schematic Design Report dated July 2024, has now moved into the development stage.

Nagoya emphasized the clinic’s importance to the community, noting that it plays a critical role in physician recruitment and healthcare service delivery. “A lot of community members don’t have physicians, and that’s the same issue we were facing back in 2005 and still face today,” he said. “At the time, taking over the Cold Lake Medical Clinic became an important priority for city council.”

Established in 2009, the clinic’s current location near the hospital is valued by doctors for it convenience. However, the design, originally built as two separate clinics, now faces challenges as physician numbers grow. Nagoya said the facility has expanded from one or two physicians “now we’re looking at five, six, and maybe even seven people that are interested there.”

To accommodate the growth, the city had purchased land west of the currently building in advance. The city’s plan is to build the expansion first, move operations into the new space, and then renovate the original clinic to avoid service disruptions.

Nagoya described the updated floor plan in detail, from patient entry to office layout and dedicated procedure rooms. The redesigned clinic will also feature “doctor condos.” “You have an office in the middle and two clinics that are flanking it. A Medical Office Assistant (MOA) station is nearby that has the supplies to be able to turn around quickly and have the patients see the doctors.”

Nagoya said the documents are still a few months away from being finalized and council accepted the clinic expansion update and information.
