Barry Milaney is the Liberal candidate in the Lakeland for the April 28 vote

The Liberal candidate for Lakeland is Barry Milaney. He is running in the riding for the April 28 Federal Elections. Here are his perspectives on the Vista Radio questionnaire to help you in your choices at the polls.

Question 1: Tell us about yourself in relation to what is at stake for Canada at this time.

Milaney: I am an optimist, not a pessimist. I do not believe that Canada is broken. I have met and talked with Mark Carney, and I believe he is the only logical choice as we move into a very uncertain world.

Question 2: What does your party propose to do about the trade wars with the USA and China?

Milaney: Our party believes that not only should we attempt to mend our economic relationships, but we should also focus on building new, stronger, and more reliable partners.

Question 3: How would your party diversify export markets away from U.S. dependency?

Milaney: We will have to focus on East and West instead of North and South. The EU has great potential as an export market. With Trans Mountain and the LNG terminal, we have the opportunity to export our energy.

Question 4: On immigration – What are your thoughts or those of your party on how to get greater involvement of immigrants in the national development of Canada?

Milaney: We need to balance immigration with our employment needs in Canada. We will have to expedite certifying the many very qualified immigrants that come to Canada. These immigrants want to be productive, and many are extremely qualified and talented.

Question 5: On Indigenous issues – How do you or your party propose to get buy-in from First Nations on projects of national interest?

Milaney: We need to see our first Nations as partners and not as obstacles. We need to encourage them to participate in the projects and benefit from them.

Question 6: On pipelines – How do you or your party propose to get Quebec on board with national projects and building pipelines through Quebec?

Milaney: I believe Quebecers are aware of the challenges of relying on traditional global markets. Quebecers want to participate in growing Canada’s economy.

Question 7: What are potential solutions to housing affordability and homelessness?

Milaney: The federal government can provide support in terms of grants and low-interest loans to developers who wish to contribute to the housing crisis and not strictly focus on profit.

Homelessness is primarily a mental health issue. The federal government can work with provinces to strengthen mental health support for those who find themselves homeless.

Question 8: What do you propose to do for the riding if elected?

Milaney: I will add my voice to those of the other elected MPs from Alberta to work for items specific to Alberta. Alberta has often said that they need to be heard, and having elected representatives on the government side is the best way to be heard.

Question 9: Are there any final thoughts on any topic that you would like to share?

Milaney: I feel very strongly that the voters of Lakeland deserve the option to vote for a candidate who represents their beliefs.
