Vandalism suspected in 60,000 litre oil spill south of Cold Lake

A suspected act of vandalism led to the release of 60,000 litres of crude oil from a Check Energy Ltd. well site, about 26 kilometres south of Cold Lake.

Cold Lake RCMP was alerted on March 22, about vandalism at four oil and gas sites near Beaverdam in the MD of Bonnyville. Unknown suspects allegedly caused significant intentional damage at the lease sites on the evening of March 21.

The damage has been repaired, and ground testing is underway. The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) classified the spill under “Emergency Phase Over” as of its most recent update, though investigations are ongoing. The AER monitor incidents, coordinating with operators and authorities to ensure environmental protection and public safety.

Cold Lake RCMP is seeking public assistance in identifying those responsible. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Cold Lake RCMP at 780-594-3302 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
