Town of St. Paul encourages businesses to improve handicap parking signage

The town of St. Paul is urging businesses to install off-the-ground handicap parking signs to ensure better visibility, particularly during winter months.

During the March 10 council meeting, CAO Steven Jeffery presented a letter from St. Paul Champions for Change, highlighting concerns about existing signage that is painted on the ground.

Snow and ice often cover up the markings, leading to unintentional misuse of designated parking spaces and creating challenges for those with mobility issues.

“As a result, people are unknowingly parking in these areas and blocking those spaces from those with mobility challenges,” said President of Champions of Change Penny Fox. She thanked businesses that already have visible signage and encourage others to follow suite.

Fox noted that a significant portion of the region’s population relies on accessible parking, including the 20 percent of residents over 65 and younger individuals with mobility challenges.

In response, councillor Brad Eamon made a motion to direct administration to engage with businesses on potentially installing more visible handicap parking signs, which was carried by council. Mayor Maureen Miller acknowledged that new developments are already required to include such signage, but cooperation from existing businesses would be beneficial.

Councillor Gary Ward emphasized the importance of raising awareness, “If you don’t talk about it, nothing’s going to get done.”
