Two arrested after attempted escape from Bonnyville RCMP

Two men were arrested in Bonnyville after attempting to flee from police during a roadside check on February 24.

During the lunch hour, an RCMP officer stopped a pickup truck on 66th Street, just south of 50th Avenue, and was conducting checks on the driver’s documents when the driver suddenly fled. However, the truck broke down less than a kilometre away, where both individuals fled on foot. The officer pursued on foot and placed both men under arrest.

A search of the suspects uncovered a handgun, ammunition, a knife, multiple brass knuckles, crystal meth, suspected fentanyl, hundreds of non-illicit tablets, drug paraphernalia, and thousands of dollars in cash.

35-year-old Cold Lake resident Derek Drake, and 33-year-old Edmonton resident Andrew Heigh, face multiple weapons charges, as well as charges for possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine, possession of stolen property, and resisting arrest. Drake faces additional charges, and resisting arrest. Drake faces additional charges, including flight from police, driving while prohibited, and operating and uninsured vehicle.

Both men were remanded in custody following bail hearings and are awaiting their first court appearance.
