During the February 18 Corporate Priorities Committee meeting, Colin Declercq presented a request for the Cold Lake Sailing Association asking for additional space at Kinosoo Beach to accommodate four newly donated dinghy-class boats.
“We are asking for some additional space down at Kinosoo Beach. The reason for that is that we have been donated four dinghy-class boats to the Cold Lake Sailing Association for the purpose of letting the community use these boats,” said Declercq.
The association’s current storage yard does not have enough room for the new boats. Declercq explained they are seeking to nearly double their existing space but are open to a smaller expansion if necessary.
While the Sailing Association does not require the fill request space right now, their modular fencing design makes expansion easier in sections. “We would be happy to settle for even two additional sections so we could house our boats and make them available to the public to use if they join the club and show competency in their sailing skills,” said Declercq.
The associations previous lease agreement expired on December 31, and did not include an extension period. The group is now seeking to renew the agreement and expand their space at the northwest corner of Kinosoo Beach for boat and equipment storage.
“The association is requesting for another agreement to continue its storage and operations there.” said Andrew Serba, the city’s Manager of Economic Development also noting that the request for the expansion covers just under 130 square meters.
Mayor Craig Copeland supported the request but asked about the history of the site, mentioning previous plans for the Cold Lake Canoe Club and past land clearing in the area. Serba confirmed that some vegetation had been cleared but said that it was away from the forested area.
City council approved a motion to renew the Sailing Association’s lease at Kinosoo Beach, including the proposed expansion.
