St. Paul RCMP shares safety tips ahead of Family Day

With Family Day just around the corner St. Paul RCMP is encouraging residents to take safety precautions to ensure an enjoyable and accident-free holiday.

RCMP are reminding everyone to dress in warm, waterproof layers to protect against the cold, and to wear hats, gloves, and proper footwear for snowy and icy conditions. Helmets should be worn when skating, sledding, or skiing, as a properly fitted helmet can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries.

Those planning to skate or fish on a frozen lake or pond should check that the ice is thick enough to support their activities and avoid areas with running water or visible cracks.

For snowmobilers, RCMP advise checking forecasts and avoiding travel during extreme cold, snowstorms, or low visibility. If snowmobiling in the mountains, it is important to check avalanche forecasts and steer clear of high-risk zones. Anyone heading out on ATV should bring a winter emergency kit, including a first aid kit, tool, a tow strap, extra fuel, and a thermal blanket.

People should use designated trails and follow local regulations whether they are hiking, skiing, or riding recreational vehicles. With shorter days and reduced visibility, reflective clothing and a flashlight is also recommended for anyone spending time outside after dark.

The RCMP also urge families to keep personal belongings secure, lock vehicles, and avoid leaving valuables in plain sight when visiting parks and trails. Parents should keep a close eye on children in busy or open areas and establish a meeting point in case anyone hets separated.

For those traveling to Family Day Activities, RCMP recommend ensuring vehicles are winter-ready, allowing extra time for travel, and adjusting driving to math road conditions.
