The city of Cold Lake considered a funding request from the Cold Lake Black Community Association during a special council meeting in December.
The organization requested financial support to purchase essential winter items such as warm clothing, blankets, heaters, and household necessities for members of the community and newcomers adjusting to Canada’s severe winter climate.
The council debated a motion to donate $1,000 to the association, with the condition that all purchases must be made locally. However, the motion was ultimately defeated.
Kevin Nagoya, Cold Lake’s CAO, outlined the association’s goal. “They are requesting for donations in order to assist with people that are coming and immigrating to Canada are struggling. They are looking for financial supports in order to purchase clothes, jackets, gloves, hats, scarves, blankets, bedding, space heaters, and other warm household essentials and necessities for their home.”
The association also emphasized inclusivity, with plans to donate excess items to local social groups if possible. While the initiative received positive recognition from several council members, opinions were divided.
The council ultimately voted against the donation, with Copeland and Mattice in favor, and councillors Vinning, Richardson, Bailey, and Parker opposing the motion.
