January Emergency Department disruptions at George McDougall Smoky Lake Healthcare Centre

The George McDougall – Smoky Lake Healthcare Centre’s emergency department is facing temporary service disruptions throughout January due to the absence of onsite physicians.

Alberta Health Services has announced that disruptions are anticipated on the following dates.

From 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 2, to 8 a.m. on Friday January, 3. 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 9, to 8 a.m. on Friday, January 10. From 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, to 8 a.m. on Friday, January 17, 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 23, to 8 a.m. on Friday, January 24 and from 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, to 8 a.m. on Friday, January 31.

During these times, nursing staff will remain onsite to provide triage, assessments, and referrals to alternate emergency departments in surrounding communities, ensuring patients receive the necessary care. EMS services will also remain fully operational, collaborating with the healthcare centre to meet emergency needs.

Patients experiencing medical emergencies are urged to call 911. For non-urgent health-related concerns, Health Link is available 24/7 at 811.

AHS has stated that efforts are underway to secure physician coverage, and disruptions may be cancelled if coverage is found.

Community members with concerns are encouraged to contact the Patient Relations team for feedback at 1-855-550-2555. AHS expressed gratitude for the understanding and patience of the community, as well as the support provided by surrounding healthcare centres and medical staff during this period.
