Alberta Licence Plates to Stay the Same

The planned redesign of Alberta’s licence plates has been stopped. On Thursday, Premier Jim Prentice announced the province is sticking with the current design, while in July, the government announced that for the first time in 30 years the province would get new licence plates.

Prentice went on to say “Albertans want us to deal with priorities they have identified in health care, education, infrastructure and seniors. Changing the design of Alberta’s licence plates is not one of them. We are going to invest our time, effort and resources on the clearly identified priorities of Albertans.”

The cost of producing and rolling out new licence plates for the 4.8 million vehicles in the province would have been 15 million dollars, which is considered to be better used elsewhere.
