Supreme Court denies appeal in Bilodeau’s case, Roger Bilodeau’s day parole extended

The Supreme Court of Canada has declined to hear Anthony Bilodeau’s appeal following his conviction for the deaths of Maurice Cardinal and Jacob Sansom in March 2020.

The decision, made on November 14, did not include reasons as is customary when the court declines to grant leave to appeal.

Anthony Bilodeau was convicted of second-degree murder in Cardinal’s death and manslaughter in Sansom’s death. On January 6, 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison without eligibility for parole for 13 years. The incident near Glendon, when Roger Bilodeau, Anthony’s father, pursued Cardinal, 57, and Sansom, 39, believing they were scouting for a robbery. During the pursuit, Roger called Anthony to bring a firearm. Anthony subsequently shot both men at a rural intersection.

However, Roger Bilodeau, convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to five years, six months, and 19 days in prison, he will continue day parole following a recent decision by the Parole Board of Canada. Roger’s day parole began on May 1. The parole board extended the arrangement on October 28, with conditions including no contact with the victims’ families, must follow curfew, and mandatory psychological counseling.

The parole board’s decision highlights Roger’s assessed low risk of reoffending but emphasizes the need for close monitoring given potential community concerns. Correctional Service Canada and local law enforcement are tasked with maintaining oversight and addressing any issues promptly. Roger has been working and attending therapy as part of his reintegration plan.

A panel hearing has been ordered to assess Roger for full parole. While his release plan would remain unchanged the board aims to explore potential risks related to community dynamics and his ongoing reintegration.
