St. Paul RCMP urges drivers to prepare for winter driving conditions

With snow and icy conditions returning to Alberta’s roads, St. Paul RCMP is reminding driver to exercise extra caution and ensure their vehicles are ready for winter.

Slippery roads and reduced visibility can turn routine travel into hazardous situations, especially on highways.

“The St. Paul RCMP reminds the community that conditions like ice and snow may require increased stopping distances and to avoid abrupt turns or stops. Be safe this winter season,” said Staff Sergeant Dennis Silliker.

To help drivers stay safe on the roads, RCMP recommends the following tips. Install winter tires, check fluid levels, and replace windshield wipers if needed. Drive slower to account for reduced traction on snow-covered or icy roads and leave space between your vehicle and others to allow for longer braking distances. Always keep headlights and taillights on, remove all snow and ice from windows, mirrors, and lights before driving. Include essentials like a blanket, flashlight, food, water, and a shovel in case of an emergency, and be cautious on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas that may freeze faster. Avoid abrupt steering, acceleration, or braking to maintain control on slippery roads, minimize distractions and keep your full attention on the road.

Drivers are encouraged to take these precautions seriously to ensure their safety and that of others during the winter months.
