Bonnyville RCMP arrest man on drug and weapons charges following traffic stop

On October 29, Bonnyville RCMP officers on patrol observed an older pickup truck with a smashed rear windshield displaying suspicious behavior in the 4900 block of 66 Street.

The truck failed to stop or signal when turning at a stop-sign intersection and soon pulled into a local gas station parking lot. After initiating a roadside check, RCMP officers explained to the driver that the stop was due to multiple Traffic Safety Act violations.

The driver was found to be unlicensed, prompting officers to arrange for the truck to be towed. During a pre-towing vehicle inventory, officers discovered crystal methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and over $500 in cash.

The driver, identified as 40-year-old Kyle Rooks of Cold Lake, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. Further search yielded additional methamphetamine, as well as a homemade taser.

Rooks now faces several charges, including possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of stolen property, and two weapons offenses related to the taser. He was released by a Justice of the Peace and is scheduled to appear in Bonnyville court on November 5.
