Province-wide fire ban implemented in Alberta due to increasing wildfire danger

Amid escalating wildfire danger and numerous active wildfires across Alberta, the Government of Alberta has enacted a comprehensive fire ban for the entire Forest Protection Area. This move comes as hot dry conditions have sparked 137 wildfires since July 1, heightening the risk across the province.

The fire ban, effective immediately, suspends or cancels all existing fire permits and halts the issuance of new permits in the Forest Protection Area. Exceptions may be made for essential agricultural or industrial burning, subject to approval by a forest officer.

The ban prohibits all outdoor wood fires, including wood campfires on public and private lands, designated campgrounds, and backyard firepits. Additionally, charcoal briquette barbecues, fireworks, and exploding targets are forbidden.

“Alberta has been experiencing difficult conditions in recent days and the risk of new wildfire starts is extremely high throughout the province. Now, more than ever, Albertans must work together to protect our communities and forests by remaining vigilant, spending time outdoors responsibly and avoiding activities that can cause a wildfire,” stated Alberta Minister of Forestry and Parks Todd Loewen.

Considering these restrictions, Albertans are permitted to use propane and natural gas-powered appliances, as well as indoor wood fires inside structures such as buildings, tents, or RVs, provided they are contained within a device equipped with a chimney and spark arrestor.

While cities, towns, villages, and federal lands, including nation parks, are exempt from this provincial ban, local jurisdictions retain the authority to implement their own fire bans. Residents are advised to check their local municipality’s website or social media for specific regulations in their area.

In a related effort to mitigate wildfire risks, the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority has declared a fire ban for the Municipal District of Bonnyville, including the Summer Villages of Bonnyville Beach and Pelican Narrows, and the Village of Glendon, effective July 10. This local ban align with the provincial measures and similarly cancels all existing fire permits and stops the issuance of new ones.
