Two killed in early morning collision on Highway 28

Tragedy struck in the early morning hours of May 28 when a two-vehicle collision on Highway 28 resulted in the deaths of two individuals.

Emergency crews, including Smoky Lake RCMP, responded to the call at approximately 12:45 am, near the intersection of Range Road 130 and Highway 28.

Preliminary findings suggest that an SUV travelling at a high rate of speed on Range Road 130 failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a sedan heading east on Highway 28.

The driver of the sedan, a 39-year-old woman from Cold Lake, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in the sedan, a 36-year-old man from Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, was airlifted to the hospital by STARS but was later pronounced deceased.

The driver of the SUV suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital. The two passengers in the SUV were also transported to the hospital with varying degrees of injuries. According to the RCMP, alcohol and/or drugs are suspected to be contributing factors in the collision.

The Alberta RCMP expressed their condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.”

The investigation into the collision is ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic event.
