Cold Lake Fighter Jet’s season takes off with first win

The Cold Lake Fighter Jets Football Club has started up the 2023 season with a massive first 36-1 victory against the Peace Country Cowboys on June 3.

The win started a little weak for the Fighter Jets but as the game went on the team found its footing. Damen Schaub the General Manager for the Cold Lake Fighter Jets Football Club says the game started off shaky.

“The offense was having trouble getting the ball moving but we started to get our defense held. Their patience helped us get the ball into the end zone and the offense really went for it then.”

After the team got comfortable and back in the rhythm Schaub says it was a great team win.

“Everyone contributed from both sides of the ball to get that win. It was a great bonding experience for all the guys who had not played for a while. It is great to get that chemistry going again. I think we got a really special group this year. Everyone has really bought into the family-first mentality picking each other up and coaching each other to success.”

The Jets’ next two games will be played at home at the Cold Lake Energy Centre on June 10th when the team battles the Calgary Wolfpack and on June 17th when the Airdrie Irish come to Cold Lake.

Last year the Jets had a 6-0 regular season record going undefeated going on to win the Alberta Football League championship game and become the winners of the Western Conference. They then went on to win the National Championships in the Canadian Major Football League.

Schaub says he would like to sustain the success from last year.

“I think we will stay competitive this season. I do not want to jinx anything but time will tell.”

The Jets were the first Alberta team to win the Canadian Major Football League in its history.
