Cold Lake mayor says wireless water meters are a success

Cold Lake’s wireless water meters were installed two years ago and Cold Lake’s Mayor Craig Copeland says thus far, they’ve been a success.

The Lakeland Mayor says this is an example of a relatively small, forward-looking project that saves staff time and resources.

“A number of households have been warned about significant spikes in water usage that often can indicate a leak. When it’s noticed, this can help people find the cause of the increase in water usage and fix the problem, minimizing the financial impact on their utility bill.”

The wireless system lets staff quickly identify and repair meters that are not working properly to ensure accuracy across the system. If needed the data collected can be used to find possible causes for water leaks with hourly updates to find spikes in water usage.

The Cold Lake news release says the new system has resulted in far fewer estimated bills each month.

The wireless communication meters were installed on all existing residential and commercial properties over a five-year period from 2016 to early 2021.
