NLSD Bus Drivers Perform Well in Emergency Training Session

An accident involving a school bus is not something anyone wants to think about, but drivers spent last Friday preparing for the worst case scenario.

Northern Lights School District held a safety training session conjunction with Southland Transportation to guide bus drivers in what do in the event of an emergency.

While there were classrooms and discussions, things got hands on very quickly. Drivers had to act out three different scenarios in real time. Drama students from Cold Lake High school and members of Cold Lake Ambulance helped provide realism as bus drivers coped with a head on collision with a tractor, a t-bone resulting in a roll-over and the bus catching fire and a fight between two students causing the bus to roll over and continuing after the accident.

Northern Lights Communications Director Nicole Garner says the session was a huge success. The students were great in their roles and the drivers handled each situation extremely well.
