Hwy 28 crash near Smoky Lake involved school bus: RCMP

Mounties say they are still investigating after a crash between a school bus and a crane left a student badly injured on Monday. It happened at around 8:30 am on Highway 28 near Range Road 180, just west of Smoky Lake.

Police say a northbound school bus with students from H.A Kostash collided with the crane headed west on the highway. 15 students were on the bus when it crashed.

The RCMP say one of the students was airlifted to Edmonton by STARS with what they are calling “Serious, life-threatening injuries” Another student was also taken to hospital. The driver of the crane suffered minor injuries.

Parents of the students have been notified and the school is providing support. Mounties from the Smoky Lake detachment remain on scene with an RCMP Collision Analyst to try and determine what, if anything, may have been a cause of the accident.
