The Cold Lake RCMP are adopting a zero tolerance policy on panhandling downtown.
The shift mostly comes from one man whose aggressive begging resulted in 27 complaints to the RCMP since July 1st alone.
Police were finally able to remove him after obtaining a search warrant in relation to sexual assault and uttering threats charges the man is wanted for in Saskatchewan.
After having to go through several legal hoops, the RCMP were able to arrest the man, who is now in Saskatchewan facing charges.
The Cold Lake RCMP plan to increase their patrols downtown and clamp down hard on panhandling. A complainant willing to make a statement will be all that’s required to press charges. The RCMP also plans to work with local groups in reducing homelessness.
