Trial begins for man accused of 2017 toddler death

The trial for a man accused of killing a Lakeland infant is set to begin Tuesday. The three-week-long trial of Sherman Whitford is due to begin in St. Paul Provincial Court.

36-year-old Whitford is charged with killing 16-month-old Veronica Poitras in August of 2017. Poitras was the daughter of Whitford’s then-girlfriend.

The RCMP investigation alleges that Poitras was beaten to death in Cold Lake when left in Whitford’s care as her mother went to do some grocery shopping. She was taken to hospital, first in Cold Lake and then in Edmonton, where she passed away on August 29th, 2017.
